Odisha FC edge past East Bengal 2-1 in a high-voltage clash

Odisha FC made a victorious return to the Kalinga Stadium after a three-week hiatus, edging neighbours East Bengal FC 2-1 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Tuesday.

Roy Krishna and Mourtada Fall scored for the Kalinga Warriors while a Dimitrios Diamantakos penalty gave the Red & Gold the only goal.

East Bengal began on the front foot, similar to the corresponding fixture last season.

Former OFC mideo Saul Crespo's header found the net early on from a Madih Talal cross, but it was disallowed in a relief to the Kalinga Warriors.

The visitors continued to attack, but Odisha were stable in defence.

The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute, when Isak's through ball was slotted home by Roy Krishna past a helpless Gill.

East Bengal received a boost right at the stroke of half-time, when a shot from Talal was blocked by Thoiba Singh, only to be judged a handball in the penalty area. Diamantakos scored from the spot to get the visitors back into the game.

The home side regained the lead from a set piece midway through the second half, when a dangerous delivery from Ahmed Jahouh found a waiting Mourtada Fall to bury the header at the far post and send the home fans into jubilation.

East Bengal's day got worse in the 76th minute when Provat Lakra was sent off after a second yellow for a reckless challenge on Jahouh.

The visitors pushed till the final whistle but Sergio Lobera's men held on for a crucial win and three points.

Odisha FC will now travel to Mumbai for the game against Mumbai City FC on the 27th October, this Sunday.
