Odisha FC stunned by FC Goa at the Kalinga Stadium

Odisha FC suffered a 2-4 loss to FC Goa at the Kalinga Stadium in Saturday’s early encounter. 

Ahmed Jahouh (29’ P) and Jerry Mawihmingthanga (88’) scored for Odisha, while Goa’s goals came from Brison Fernandes (8’, 53’), Udanta Singh (45+2’), and an own goal by Amey Ranawade (56’). 

Dorielton made his league debut for Odisha FC in a match marked by high intensity. The first half began with intense action from both sides. Odisha FC’s Jerry Mawihmingthanga nearly opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, missing narrowly after a well-placed cross from Rahim Ali. Goa responded with early pressure, earning a corner in the 5th minute and a free kick, setting the tone for an engaging contest.

Goa struck first in the 8th minute as Brison Fernandes found the bottom corner with a composed finish, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Odisha fought back with Lalthathanga Khawlhring and Ahmed Jahouh leading the charge. Their efforts paid off in the 27th minute when Odisha was awarded a penalty after Jerry Lalrinzuala was fouled. Jahouh converted with ease, leveling the score.

In stoppage time of the first half, Udanta Singh restored Goa's lead with a clinical strike. The teams head into the second half with Goa narrowly ahead by 2-1.

Brison Fernandes shone again as FC Goa extended their lead to 3-1 with a spectacular right-footed strike from outside the box. The night got worse for Odisha FC in the 56th minute with an own goal by Amey Ranawade, pushing the scoreline to 4-1 in Goa's favor.

Late in the game, Jerry. M scored a consolation, heading in a well-placed cross from Thoiba Singh to find the bottom left corner in the 88th minute. The goal narrowed the deficit to 2-4 but wasn’t enough to improve the night for Odisha.

Following the defeat, Odisha FC remained sixth in the league table with 20 points from 14 matches. They now shift focus to their next fixture, traveling to Chennai to face Chennaiyin FC on January 9, 2025, with a 7:30 PM IST kickoff at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
