With the Hero ISL 2021-22 approaching soon, the OFC Media Team has launched a new series of articles featuring some selected Odisha FC stars who will discuss their love for the sport. To kick start the series today, we have experienced goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh sharing his thoughts with you. Here are the excerpts:

Love for football

Kamaljit: There was an academy near my home – Sant Baba Hazara Singh Football Academy. That was really good academy and whenever I used to pass through that place, I used to watch boys playing. I had a dream of getting selected for the same academy and I wanted to play like them. I fell in love with football during my schooldays when I was in my 3rd or 4th grade. During the sports periods, I wanted to play football only. When I had any free time, I started playing football. When I was in my 6th grade, I was selected for the academy and my proper training started from then.

Childhood role model

Kamaljit: Edwin Van der Sar, who was with Manchester United, was in top form when he used to play and even Petr Cech. Both of them played for a long time and played really well at the top level. It was really wonderful watching them play and always wanted to be like them one day. I was trying to learn more and more from them and was inspired a lot by both of them.

Biggest Inspiration

Kamaljit: The biggest inspiration in my life is my mom – Narinder Kaur. She was also good at sports. She was a very good athlete but her family didn’t allow her to continue. So whatever dreams she had to achieve in life, she tried to live those through me. Whatever I have asked for my game,
she has always supported me. She still takes care of my diet, my workout and everything. She is my biggest inspiration.

Other Sports he follows

Kamaljit: I follow cricket and UFC a little bit. These days I am following Formula 1 and also like tennis as well. You get something different to watch and learn from different games. Every sport is unique on its own.

Aim and aspirations

Kamaljit: The main aim is to get back to the Indian National Team and be there. Want to try that I can get maximum matches in the Indian side and continue playing for the country. Another important target this year is to qualify for the playoffs in the ISL and try hard to lift the ISL trophy after that. I am completely focused on these two nowadays.

The biggest moment of his career so far

Kamaljit: The biggest moment for me was the 0-0 draw for the Indian National Team against Qatar in Qatar. I had gone there with the senior team and that was a huge thing for us and the biggest moment for me as well.
