Odisha FC do double over 10-man East Bengal with a comeback win
The Kalinga Warriors came from behind to beat East Bengal FC 2-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday.
Odisha FC dominated the first half against East Bengal, signaling their intent early on but falling short of finding the target. The Red and Gold Brigade faced an early setback with Madih Talal’s injury, and things worsened when Jeakson Singh was shown a red card for a rash foul Diego Mauricio in the 25th minute. Despite the numerical advantage, Odisha couldn’t capitalise on numerous instances, with the Torchbearers being resolute in their defence.
However, the second half began strongly for East Bengal, and the pressure paid off as the 10 men in red and gold took the lead thanks to a Lalchungnunga strike in the 53rd minute. However, Odisha FC responded immediately, with Jerry M scoring a stunning equalizer just two minutes later.
Odisha kept up the attack in the attempt to find a winner, and Sergio Lobera’s men finally had reason to cheer in the 81st minute. Diego Mauricio’s pass found Hugo Boumous inside the box, who made no mistake burying the chance to put Odisha FC ahead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
East Bengal continued to push in search of a leveller, but Odisha's defence held firm to secure a vital win and secure the double over the Torchbearers.
Odisha FC’s next outing is against another Kolkata side, with the Juggernauts scheduled to face Mohammedan SC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on December 27.
