Odisha FC look for the perfect start as Chennaiyin visit at the Kalinga
Preview:
Odisha FC’s Indian Super League campaign will kick off on Saturday, September 14, when it takes to the field for the opener against Chennaiyin FC. Sergio Lobera’s team will be looking for the ideal start to get the season underway, but the two-time ISL winners have proven to be tough opponents.
The teams have gone head-to-head 10 times in the league since 2019. Both have three wins each, sharing the spoils on the remaining four occasions.
It was one win apiece for the teams last season. Odisha secured a comfortable 2-0 win at the Kalinga, thanks to goals from Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Diego Mauricio.
However, it was a day to forget at the Marina Arena. A stoppage time winner from Jordan Murray — after Roy Krishna had cancelled out Ankit Mukherjee’s opener — gave Chennaiyin all three points as Odisha FC’s gut-wrenching loss proved damaging in the ISL League Shield race.
Squad and Preparations:
There is much to look forward to in the new campaign. The team has welcomed Hugo Boumous, Rahim Ali, Rohit Kumar, and Saviour Gama, while Raynier Fernandes returns for his second stint with the club.
Odisha FC finished fourth in the league campaign last season, losing in the semi-final stage. With four of the first five league fixtures at home this season, coach Sergio Lobera will be looking for a strong start and an early advantage in the title race.
Pre-Match Press Conference:
Odisha FC head coach Sergio Lobera and captain Amrinder Singh addressed the media at the pre-match press conference held at the Kalinga Stadium on Friday.
Sergio Lobera talked about the new season and the squad: "We are preparing the squad and preparing the games always be loyal to our style of play. We are building a team thinking in this profile of the players and also we are going to approach the game like this. It's very important to understand this. It's helpful for me as a coach also to start the second season in this club, all of the players, practically all of the players now, know what I want as a coach, and this is very helpful. We signed some players trying to be stronger, but we are preparing the game as always, being loyal to our style of play. We are strong playing like this, and this is the idea for tomorrow's game and this is the idea, the profile of the players we have in the squad."
"I think it's more about ourselves, how we have to play, how we have to attack, and how we have to defend. I think it's easier sometimes, of course, we use the point and it's good work. Sometimes we play better and sometimes they play better. Of course, we try to control decisions on how we have to play, and how we have to attack. And most important for us is to be focused on ourselves and the way we have an attacking side and we love to attack and it's most important we focus on ourselves and do well." said the club captain, Amrinder Singh, when asked about the challenge.
